The Owens-Izhitsa crisis was a minor armed conflict in the Delaware system that lasted from 4 August 2247 to 9 September 2247. It began after Russian mining company Izhitsa Corp. established mining colonies in the Delaware system, which the Owens Federal Union (founded by energy company Owens Energy) saw as a direct violation of the 2162 New Sydney Convention. The conflict ended after the New Sydney Convention was revized, allowing Izhitsa Corp. to continue operations in the Delaware system on the condition that they not encroach on Owens' claims in the system.

The conflict is also often referred to as the Corporate War, due to the fact that it opposed two independent colonial powers attached not to nation states, but to corporations.

Background

Owens Energy (formerly known as Owens Petroleum & Engineering), an energy company based in the Stronghold system, launched the Independence colony ship on 19 May 2221 after having had to delay the mission 3 months from an initial 19 February 2221 launch date. The ship was carrying over 1,600 human colonists, over 100,000 human embryos as well as livestock and supplies. The destination of the Independence was the planet Delaware II (later renamed to Owens) in the Delaware system. The first colony on the planet, Concordia, was established on 12 June 2222.

In January 2247, Novgorod system-based mining company Izhitsa Corp. established mining colonies on various moons and asteroids in the Delaware system, founding the Izhitsa Colonial Territories. In May 2247, Izhitsa sent out various mining ventures to asteroids in the Appalachia Belt, an asteroid belt in the inner Delaware system. Seeing this as a clear violation of the New Sydney Convention, the now well established Owens Federal Union urged Izhitsa to withdraw from the Delaware system or face repercussions.
