The Proxima Centauri system (also known as Alpha Centauri C) is the first extrasolar star system colonized by humans. Its Latin name means the 'nearest [star] of Centaurus'. Located only 4.24 light years from the Sol system, it is on the primary warp lane that spans the Orion Arm. Proxima Centauri is a member of the Alpha Centauri star system, being identified as component Alpha Centauri C, and orbits the Alpha Centauri AB pair with a period of about 550,000 years.

Etymology

The name Proxima Centauri is Latin for "nearest [star] of Centaurus", referring to its close proximity to Sol and its location within the constellation Centaurus.
